Library Instruction

What is library instruction, and why is it needed?

Library instruction, also known as bibliographic instruction, is a process in which librarians teach information literacy skills. In other words, librarians teach others how to effectively locate, evaluate, and make use of information. This may sound simple, but it isn't. In a world of viral misinformation, deliberate disinformation, and constant information overload, information literacy skills are more important than ever. These skills help promote student success across the board, and enhance student learning and achievement in all areas.

What topics are covered under library instruction?

The library provides several different one-shot modules that can be presented in approximately 30 minutes via class visit. These can be combined into longer presentations, or multiple class visits may be scheduled. Students can request individual instruction, and instructors may also send individual students to the library for one-on-one instruction in these topics. The instruction request form is linked at the bottom of this section.

Library Space

Individuals & Small Groups

Students may use the library as a study space at their leisure. There are tables and chairs available in the open. The Americus campus has a small private study room available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Clubs & Classes

Anyone wanting to use the library space to hold a meeting, and instructors wanting to bring their classes into the library, are encouraged to notify the library via email (allyson.king@southgatech.edu for the Americus Campus; dwpersall@southgatech.edu for the Cordele Campus) at least two days in advance, in order to prevent any conflicts. Standing meeting times can be arranged.

Learning Technology

Computers

The library offers both desktop computers and laptops for student use. Laptops may not be checked out at this time, but may be checked out to students for use within the library itself.

The Americus Campus Library has a small number of VR headsets available with many simulations related to programs offered at SGTC. These cannot be checked out by students, but they may be used within the library itself once a waiver is signed.
